The Directory aims to ensure you are just three clicks away from getting in touch with the person or organisation you are looking for – and it can be used by those in need of support, or by professionals and carers.

Befriending (telephone or face-to-face) - Back To Top

Would you like some regular company? One of our friendly volunteer befrienders can:

  • visit weekly for a tea and a chat
  • go out with you for a little walk
  • visit a local café
  • go shopping with / for you
  • chat to you by phone

All of our Partners' befrienders are DBS-checked and come subject to good references.

Do you or a family member suffer with Dementia? The Partnership can offer:

  • Support and advice both for those living with Dementia and those who have close family members with the condition
  • Activity groups for people living with Dementia

It is well known that as we get older and our skin becomes thinner and less elastic we are more prone to suffer from a variety of foot problems, e.g. corns and blisters.

  • We can connect you with a fully trained foot care specialist who can treat your foot problems and make sure you enjoy happier feet as you grow older

Hairdressing - Back To Top

Keeping our hair in good condition doesn't become any less important as we age. One of our Partners, Age UK, can provide a range of hairdressing services, including:

  • Haircuts
  • Shampoos and sets
  • Blow dries
  • Colours and foiling

Handymen - Back To Top

Do you need some help with practical DIY tasks around the home?

We can offer a low cost local repair service for older, disabled and vulnerable households, including:

  • Adaptations
  • Improvements
  • Repairs
  • Home security
  • Small practical tasks around the home (curtain poles, light bulbs, picture hanging etc)

Whether you are one of the 17% of people in the UK who suffer from severe hearing loss, have a friend or family member who is deaf or hard of hearing, or are a hearing student, we can offer a range of support and resources for you, including:

  • NHS hearing aid clinics
  • Free assessments for assistive equipment
  • Free lipreading classes
  • Tinnitus support groups
  • British Sign Language courses
  • One-to-one support for deafblind people

Over Fifties Forum - Back To Top

We believe it is important that the voice of Thanet's older people is heard at both national and local levels. The Thanet Over Fifties Forum (“TOFFs”) [link to TOFFs Page], run by the Thanet Volunteer Bureau, engages with and represents the interests of older people across the Isle, offering:

  • Free Membership of TOFFs
  • Regular and informative newsletters
  • Talks on important subjects like pensions, and health and social care provision
  • Much more besides

Social Activities - Back To Top

Would you like to get out and about, socialise and make new friends?

  • "YOUR TIME" is a weekly social activity afternoon perfect for a coffee and a chat and to meet others
  • A different activity, workshop or entertainment every week (always optional, never compulsory)
  • Lots of other stuff to do, including puzzles, arts and crafts, card games, raffles, quizzes, guest speakers, chair-based exercises and much more...
  • Where: Centenary Hall, Hardres Street, Ramsgate.
  • When: Every Wednesday from 1.00pm-3.00pm
  • Cost: £2 admission to cover refreshments
  • A variety of other group social activities are available in Margate - contact us for up to date information.

Support at Home - Back To Top

It may seem like a paradox, but getting older sometimes means we need a little bit of help in order to continue living independently in our own homes. Our Partners offer a range of services which can do just this:

  • Bathing
  • Preparing meals
  • Cleaning
  • Handyman assistance
  • Gardening
  • Shopping
  • Housework
  • Fitting equipment, e.g. stair lifts and bath seats

NB. While each service differs slightly, most are costed. We can help advise you of any charges.

Support for sight impaired people - Back To Top

Nobody with sight impairment should feel precluded from living a safe, healthy and fulfilled life. We can help you, or someone you know with sight impairment, achieve your own personal goals through the comprehensive support our Partners can offer you, including:

  • Sight Support Service
  • Talking newspapers
  • Mobility and equipment training
  • Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLOs) based in hospital eye clinics
  • Leisure activities and social support
  • One-to-one support for deafblind people

Transport to and from medical appointments - Back To Top

Do you find public transport difficult? Would you prefer the security of a friendly and experienced volunteer driver to get you to and from your all-important clinical appointments? We can help provide transport to and from:

  • GPs
  • Hospitals
  • Dentists
  • Chiropodists
  • Opticians
  • Other medical appointments

NB. A small membership fee plus mileage are chargeable. Trips can be local (Thanet), or regional (Kent and London).

Do you need short-term help getting hold of mobility aids? Our Partners may be able to help you hire:
